The stories behind the car logos
"What fools indeed we are mortal
To provide care of a car,
With ne'er a bit of time to see
About our own machinery! "
- John Kendrick Bangs (1862-1922), American writer, editor and satirist.
Indeed, we care about and for cars more than we care for ourselves. And often the first thing that matters is the brand, symbolized by the logo. Some of these cars are famous logos in the world, instantly recognizable at any time. The star Mercedes Benz three-pointed, the Ferrari prancing horse, the Chevrolet bowtie - they represent the brand across where there products are. Here, we present the stories not so well known behind some of these well-known logos in no particular order. We deliberately not include logos that are self-explanatory, such as those that include the name (or initials) of the brand - Ford, Honda, etc.
1. Mercedes Benz Two German automakers, Benz & Cie. and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft merged in 1928 resulting in Daimler-Benz Co. The famous logo in three favorites was originally designed by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, and subsequently presented to Daimler Benz. After Daimler's death, his partner, Wilhelm Maybach, took over the company has sold many cars at Daimler wealthy businessman Emil Jellinek, who later bankroll the development of a new line of cars the name of his daughter Mercedes. Hence the name. The logo is supposed to represent the brand "domination of the earth, sea and air."
2. Ferrari's famous Cavallino Creeping or "prancing horse" logo has its roots in a chance encounter between the founder Enzo Ferrari and Countess Paolina, mother of Count Francesco Baracca, who was an ace of the Italian air force and used to paint a horse on the side their aircraft. The countess asked Ferrari to paint a horse on his cars for luck. The black color was used to symbolize the grief at the death of Baracca in the action while the color yellow represented his hometown of Modena.
3. Chevrolet: The Chevrolet bowtie logo is one of the simplest, but most well-known symbols of companies worldwide. It was first used in 1913 and there are conflicting stories on its origin. If a theory is that he was inspired by a wallpaper pattern seen by the co-founder William Durant, another says it represents a Swiss cross in a tribute to the origins of the other co-founder Louis Chevrolet. Incidentally, Durant founded General Motors before it was removed Chevrolet and implemented.
4:. Dodge, the brand has a new logo for this year, but most people continue to identify with "ram's head" logo. The first logo appeared as a hood ornament in the 1930s. The ram was chosen for its robustness, some thing Dodge has always tried to portray. In fact, so popular that the logo will become the Dodge trucks began to be called the Rams. Today it is still used to mark the spin Ram.
5 Buick.: Few know that Buick is the oldest American automotive manufacturer. Founded in 1899 by David Dunbar Buick, it was later acquired by William Durant and became the centerpiece of General Motors conglomerate. The logo was originally a single shield representing Buick ancestral coat of arms. In 1960, the single shield has been replaced by a trio of red, white and blue representing the three Buick cars then in the stable - the LeSabre, Invicta, and Electra.
6:. This car Maserati Luxury Italian manufacturer was founded in 1914 by five brothers, Alfieri Maserati, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore and Ernesto, in the city of Bologna. The logo was trident designed by an artist and is based on a sculpture Fontana del Nettuno in (Fountain of Neptune) in Bologna. Neptune is the Roman god of the sea and is represented with a trident in his hand.
7. Mitsubishi The Mitsubishi brand cars is a member of a larger conglomerate that began his life as a shipping company in 1914 and is named after the Japanese word for three diamonds ("Mitsu" meaning "Three" and "Bishi" which means "water traps," rhomboid also like diamonds). Therefore, the origin of the logo becomes clear.
Subaru 8. The name of the company is in fact the Japanese translation of the Pleiades cluster, which also means "to congregate. "Subaru is a division of Japanese conglomerate Fuji Heavy Transport Industries (FHI). The name refers to the five companies that have joined forces (Fuji Kogyo, Fuji Jidosha Kogyo, Omiya Fuji Kogyo, Utsunomiya Sharyo and Tokyo Fuji Sangyo) to form FHI. The logo represents the cluster.
9:. Mazda The company derives its name from the Persian god Ahura Mazda and the name of the founder Jujiro Matsuda. The stylized "M" logo, also known as "cool" logo, Mazda is spreading its wings for the future. It may also represent Ahura Mazda, which is often represented by a sun-disk drive.
10. Audi: The company name is based on the name of the founder August Horch, which means to listen - which, if is translated into Latin, became Audi. Horch was originally founded Horch Automobil-Werke, where he was forced to leave before founding Audi in 1899. In 1932, Audi merged with Horch, DKW, Wanderer to form Auto Union. The Audi logo represent the four interlocking rings that merger. His likeness with the Olympic logo caused the International Olympic Committee to continue in 1995 Audi.
11 Pontiac.: GM could have declared intention of abandoning the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010, but his arrow logo continues to be highly visible on American roads. The brand was named after Native American leader Chief Pontiac who led a struggle against British occupation in the 18th century. If the first Pontiac logo shown by an Indian chief headdress, it was updated in 1957 to the design currently used American Indian arrow red, also known as the "Dart".
12:. BMW Completing the list is preferred to drive BMW. The abbreviation of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (Bavarian Motor Works). The two layers circular logo BMW, also described as a cockade, was interpreted to represent a spinning propeller, given the company began as a manufacturer of aircraft engines. The colors white and blue represent the official flag of Bavaria, a state in Germany where BMW origin.
