2000 chevrolet cavalier will not start?

I just bought a 2000 chevy cavalier and its been great for the past week. Today i went to the gas station, put gas in and then it wouldnt start. After making sure the shifter was in park as far as it would go it finally started. i drove it home, turned it off and it hasnt started since. It'snot turning over, we tired boosting it, the radio and everything works, we checked the connections for the battery, still cant figure it out. When i try to start it is doesnt make any sound except for a really faint hissing for about 3 seconds and the guages on the dash go up and down randomly very slowly. We;ve tried everything and still cant figure it out. Any suggestions?

its the battery buy a new battery and see if that helps if not then its the alternator
