GM Quality Versus Toyota and Honda Quality - A Study in Contrasts

Consumer Reports recently published some of its 2011 reliability charts, which offer a 10-year reliability history, when data and model life span permit. One of the strongest features of these charts is that they permit a reader to spot quality differences with a cursory look. This article summarizes some of the contrasts between the quality of products by General Motors Corporation and the quality of products by Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda Motor Company that may be gathered from a brief inspection.

To make the contrasts, the number of Worse-Than-Average and Much-Worse-Than-Average reliability ratings will be counted for corresponding vehicles.

General Motors' Chevrolet Impala vs. the Toyota Avalon

In the 2011 Reliability Chart of the V6 Chevrolet Impala, there are 29 Worse-Than-Average reliability ratings and 32 Much-Worse-Than-Average reliability ratings for a total of 61 (35.9%) below average reliability ratings for model years 2001 to 2010. In contrast, the V6 Toyota Avalon has only 4 (2.4%) subpar reliability ratings for the same model years.

GM's Chevrolet Malibu vs. the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord

The 4-cylinder Chevrolet Malibu has 24 (20.2%) below average reliability ratings, half of which are Much-Worse-Than-Average reliability ratings, for model years 2004 to 2010. In contrast, the 4-cylinder Toyota Camry has no below average reliability ratings for the same model years and has only 2 (1.2%) such ratings in its entire 10-year chart. The 4-cylinder Honda Accord has more below average reliability ratings than the Camry, 3 (2.5%) for models 2004 to 2010 and 6 (3.5%) for model years 2001 to 2010; however, the Accord has far fewer subpar reliability ratings than the Malibu. In short, look for far fewer serious problems from a 4-cylinder Toyota Camry or a 4-cylinder Honda Accord than a General Motors 4-cylinder Chevrolet Malibu.

GM's Chevrolet Equinox vs. the Toyota Highlander and the Honda Pilot

The V6 Chevrolet Equinox has 29 (28.4%) below average ratings in its 2011 6-year reliability history, 14 of which are Much Worse Than Average. In contrast, the V6 Toyota Highlander has no below average rating, in the corresponding 6-year history or its entire 2011 10-year data history, and similarly the V6 Honda Pilot has no such rating, in the corresponding 6-year history or its entire 8-year history.

GM's Chevrolet Colorado vs. the Toyota Tacoma and the Honda Ridgeline

The 4-wheel-drive Chevrolet Colorado has 30 (44.1%) below average ratings in its recent 4-year reliability history, 19 of which are Much Worse Than Average. In contrast, the V6, 4-wheel-drive Toyota Tacoma has 2 (1.2%) below average ratings in its entire 2011 10-year reliability history and the V6 Honda Ridgeline has 2 (2.4%) in its 2011 5-year reliability history.

GM's Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 vs. the Toyota Tundra

The V8 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 has 48 (35.3%) subpar reliability ratings in its 8-year data history, 18 of which are Much Worse Than Average. In contrast, the V8, 4-wheel-drive Tundra has only 6 (3.5%) below average ratings in its full 10-year data history.

GM's Buick LaCrosse vs. the Toyota Avalon

The V6, front-wheel-drive Buick LaCrosse has 19 (18.6%) subpar reliability ratings in its 6-year data history, 6 of which are Much Worse Than Average. As noted earlier, the V6, front-wheel-drive Avalon has 4 (2.4%) subpar ratings in its entire 2011 10-year history.

GM's Cadillac DTS vs. Toyota's Lexus LS

The Cadillac DTS has 14 (20.6%) below average reliability ratings in its recent 4-year history, 8 of which are Much Worse Than Average. In contrast, the Lexus LS has 8 (4.7%) below average reliability ratings in its full 2011 10-year history.

GM's Cadillac STS vs. Toyota's Lexus ES and Honda's Acura RL

The V6 Cadillac STS has 24 (35.3%) below average reliability ratings in its 2011 4-year data history, 14 of which are Much Worse Than Average. In contrast, the Lexus ES has 4 (2.4%) in its entire current 10-year data history and Honda's Acura RL has 2 (2.0%) in its current 6-year data history.

GM's Cadillac CTS vs. Toyota's Lexus GS

The V6, rear-wheel-drive Cadillac CTS has 34 (25.0%) below average ratings in its 2011 8-year reliability history, 12 of which are Much Worse Than Average. In contrast, the rear-wheel-drive Lexus GS has 10 (6.5%) below average ratings in its entire 2011 9-year reliability history.

GM's Cadillac SRX vs. Toyota's Lexus RX and Honda's Acura RDX

The all-wheel-drive Cadillac SRX has 43 (42.2%) below average ratings in its 2011 6-year reliability history, 23 of which are Much Worse Than Average. In contrast, the Lexus RX has 2 (1.2%) below average ratings in its entire current 10-year reliability history and the Acura RDX has 4 (5.9%) in its recent 4-year reliability history.

GM's Cadillac Escalade vs. Toyota's Lexus LX

The Cadillac Escalade has 30 (25.2%) below average ratings in its 2011 9-year reliability history, 21 of which are Much Worse Than Average. In contrast, the Lexus LX has 6 (3.9%) below average ratings in its 2011 9-year reliability history.

GM's Chevrolet Aveo vs. the Toyota's Scion xD

The Chevrolet Aveo has 45 (44.1%) below average ratings in its 6-year data history, 30 of which are Much Worse Than Average. In contrast, the Scion xD has 2 (5.9%) subpar ratings in its 2-year data history, neither of which is Much Worse Than Average. In addition, all of the Aveo's overall Verdict ratings are below average (5 are Much Worse Than Average), while both of the Scion xD's Verdict ratings are Much Better Than Average.

Consumer Reports uses one of 5 possible reliability ratings for each of its chart's 18 categories - Engine Major, Engine Minor, Engine Cooling, Transmission Major, Transmission Minor, Drive System, Fuel System, Electrical, Climate System, Suspension, Brakes, Exhaust, Paint/Trim, Body Integrity, Body Hardware, Power Equipment, Audio System, and its overall Used Car Verdict. The first 17 of these categories are used to determine the number and percentages of below average (subpar) ratings for each of the above models. The five ratings for these categories are Much Better Than Average, Better Than Average, Average, Worse Than Average, and Much Worse Than Average, the last two of which constitute a below average rating.
