The original Bronco was an ORV (Off-Road Vehicle), designed to compete primarily with models of Jeep CJ and the International Harvester Scout. The small size Bronco riding on a 92-inch (2,300 mm) wheelbase made it popular for off-roading and other uses, but impractical for such things as towing. The Ford Bronco was the first compact SUV and the compact SUV segment of Ford and medium enterprises would be taken by the pick-up Compact base Ford Bronco II (1984-1990), Ford Explorer (1991-present) and the Ford Escape (2001-present).
The idea behind the Bronco began with Ford product manager Donald N. Frey, who also designed the Ford Mustang, and even Lee Iacocca has pushed the idea through to production. At In many ways, the Bronco concept is more original than the Mustang, while the Mustang was based on the Ford Falcon, the Bronco has a frame, suspension, and body which are not shared with another vehicle.
The Bronco was designed under engineer Paul G. Axelrad. Although the axles and brakes are from Ford F-100 pickup four wheel drive, front axle was located by radius arms (from the base near the rear of the forward transmission axle) and a lateral track bar, allowing the use of coil springs which gave the Bronco a tight turn (34 feet) turning circle, Long wheel travel, and an anti-dive geometry which was useful for snowplows. The rear suspension is more conventional, with leaf springs in typical Hotchkiss design. A passage on the fly transfer case and Dana Corp. locking hubs were standard, and heavy suspension was an option.
The initial engine was the Ford 170 cu in (2.8 L) straight-6, modified with solid valve lifters, a six-quart U.S. oil pan, fuel pump heavy air cleaner oil bath, and a carburetor with a float chamber compensated against tilting.
Styling was subordinated to simplicity and the economy, so everything was glass flat, bumpers were simple C-sections, the frame is a simple scale of square section, and the left and Fundamental Rights door skins were identical except for mounting holes.
The Broncos were offered early in a coach, he always Halfcab popular and less popular roadster configurations. Roadster was discontinued at the beginning and the sport package, which later became a model line, has been added.
The base price was only $ 2,194, but the long list of options included front bucket seats, rear bench, a tachometer and a CB radio, as well as functional elements such as towing bar, auxiliary gas tank, a power takeoff, a snowplow, winch, and a posthole digger. aftermarket accessories included campers, overdrive units, and the usual array of wheels, tires, chassis and parts engine for increased performance.
The Bronco sold well in its first year (23,776 units produced), then remained in second position after CJ-5 until the advent of full-size Chevrolet Blazer 1969. Without a platform dedicated small SUV, the Blazer was based on their full-size pickup now that is a vehicle larger and more powerful, offering greater luxury, comfort and space. The list included more options an automatic transmission and steering, and thus had more appeal. Ford responded by expanding the optional V8 engine from 289 cu in (4.7 L) and 200 hp (150 kW) to 302 cu in (4.9 L) and 205 hp (153 kW), but this still does not match the Blazer optional 350 cu in (5.7 L) and 255 hp (190 kW) (power figures are above nominal power changed in the early to mid-1970.)
In 1973 the 170 was replaced by a 200 cu in direction straight six and automatic transmissions were made optional, and sales have skyrocketed 26,300. By then, however, sales were Blazer double those of the Bronco, and International Harvester had seen the light and go out with the Scout II was more in the category Blazer. In 1974, the largest and vehicles more comfortable as the Cherokee made more sense for the average driver-oriented than the more rustic Bronco. Sluggish sales of the Bronco (230,800 more than twelve years) did not allow a large budget for upgrades, and remained virtually unchanged until the advent of larger, Blazer-like The second generation Bronco in 1978. The production of the original model fell (14,546 units) in its final year, 1977.
Racing
In 1965, Bill Stroppa race car builder has built a team the Broncos off-road competition in long distance for Ford. Often in partnership with Ford favored team race Holman-Moody, Stroppa / Holman / Moody (SHM) Broncos proceeded to dominate the Mint 400, Baja 500 and Mexican 1000 (which was later called the Baja 1000). In 1969, SHM again entered a team of six Broncos in the Baja 1000. In 1971, a "Baja Bronco" package partially derivatives Stroppa design was available in the showrooms of Ford, with quick ratio steering, automatic transmission, fender covers Gates Commando tires flares, a roll bar, reinforced bumpers, a padded steering wheel, and distinctive red, white, blue and black paint. However, a price of U.S. $ 5,566 compared to the standard V8 Bronco price of $ 3,665, only 650 were sold during the next four years.
In 1966, a Bronco "Funny Car" built by Doug Nash for the quarter mile dragstrip run "erratic" with some small time of 8 seconds, but sidelined sanctioning organizations where trucks and aluminum frames have been outlawed.

1978 Ford Bronco
The redesign of the Bronco in 1978 was based on a shortened F-100 full picking companies. There was a retractable roof and before folding rear seats, similar to competition Blazer. It shared many chassis, transmission and body components. The clip above all to be confused with their full-size trucks for years, and in 1978 and 1979 Broncos were available in round or square styles sealed low beam. Ford started the redesign in 1972, codenamed Project Short-Horn, but the introduction has been delayed by concerns over the crisis of the mid-1970s fuel. The base engine is a cube 351 in (5.8 L) with an optional 400 cu in (6.6 L). Ford 9 "rear axle and a Dana 44 front axle are standard, with spring suspension at the rear of the leaves and coil sprung front laterally stabilizes.
The Broncos 1978 and 1979 is also an option for full-time driving wheels using the four New Process 203 cases of chain transfer engine or, more commonly, part-time four-wheel drive with the new process transfer 205 cases gear.
1979 has seen the addition of a catalytic converter, and other miscellaneous equipment emission control.

The Bronco has received a major overhaul for 1980, coinciding with the F-Series. The new Bronco was shorter and had cosmetic changes as well as powertrain, suspension and other stuff. More specifically, the front axle of living has been replaced by a double beam traction (APCs) at the end of installation before an independent front suspension. TTB a hybrid of a true independent front suspension and a solid front axle with a "solid" axle which pivots around the difference and uses coil springs instead of leaf springs. The APC system provided a higher degree of control and comfort both on and off road, but Trip wheel sacrificed, and is known to be difficult to keep aligned when more than standard tires are used.
With an economy smaller Bronco and fuel in mind, Ford offered a 300 cu in (4.9 L) six cylinder engine as the base. Although this engine came with more torque than the 302 cu in (4.9 L) V8 and comparable to the 351 cu in (5.8 L) V8 (until the model output high), the engine was limited by a 1-bbl carb and restrictive single exhaust manifolds. electronic emissions equipment added in 1984, new restrictions the power of the inline six. Ford sold their remaining stock of 351M engines before switching to the 351W in mid-model year 1982. A High Output "version of the 351W became an option in 1984 and continued in model year 1987 until the introduction of the injection fuel. Output was 210 hp (157 kW) at 4000 rpm vs. the standard 351W 2-barrel that made 156 hp (116 kW) at 4000 rpm. The 302 was the first engine to receive electronic fuel injection, from the year 1985 model, and a four-speed automatic overdrive. Eddie Bauer trim package began in 1985 as well.
Aesthetically, Ford returned to using its "blue oval" logo in front of just redesigned the grille, and removed the "FORD" letters from the hood in 1982. Classic square mirrors have been abandoned 1986.

In 1987, the body and transmitting the maximum size Bronco changed, as it was still based on the F-Series. The new aero body style reflects a greater consolidation of many Ford vehicles for the new model year. In 1988, Broncos all have been sold with electronic fuel injection (the first time in 1985 with 302). In 1991, a Silver 25th Anniversary Edition has been sold with special badges, paint and a Currant gray leather interior and red. Nite edition, similar to the F-Series is also available. All Broncos were built in the Michigan Truck Plant Wayne, Michigan the same line as the F-150.
Transmission 5-speed M5OD-R2 was added as an option for 302-powered Broncos in 1987. 1988-89 351W trucks received a transmission c6. For 1990, the electronically controlled automatic overdrive standard E4OD came on the 351W and 300. The AOD was crossed with the 302 from 1987 to 1990. In 1991, all engines received the E4OD.
A V8 engine and transmission automatic were standard in Eddie Bauer, Nite, and trucks Silver Anniversary.

Two-Tone Bronco
The Bronco, with the F-Series has been updated for 1992. The new Bronco was redesigned with security in mind, including crumple zones front and rear shoulder belts, a brake light integrated into the third removable top, and after 1994, Driver side airbags. Due to fire back and shoulder belts safety equipment built into the top, the summit was more legally detachable and all the literature in textbooks owners who had already explained how to take off the top was removed. outside cosmetic and interior changes included a front end scanning and impetus. Mirrors were also offered for the first times, and in 1996, the Bronco became the first vehicle to incorporate flashing lights in rearview mirrors. brown leather seats and blue were the first offering in 1992 until the end of production. 1994-1996 XLTS and Eddie Bauer have signs of a split rear loading cargo cover and net. The 302 have air Mass (FMM) in 1994. MAF in 1995 to 351 in California. The rest of the 351s has MAF in 1996 along with OBD2 both the 302 and 351. 94-95 351 blocks are ready to roll, and 1996, two 302 and 351w are roller blocks. Eddie Bauer 1995 has a broken front bumper. 1996 XLTS and Eddie Bauer have a broken front bumper. Eddie Bauer All 1994-1996 have an overhead console. Some 1994-1996 XLTS or Eddie Bauer lit visor and a rear view mirror dimming. 94-96 XLT Sport trucks are monochrome. They were available in black, red and white. In 1992, Ford offered a bronco 1992 edition Nite. All in black with gray interior.
Bronco Centurion
From the late 1980s through his death in 1996, the Bronco was also sold as Ford Dealers modified SUV 4-door (making it similar to the excursion or suburban). These Broncos 4-doors have been converted by Centurion Vehicles of White Pigeon, Michigan. The conversion involved combining a new cabin crew short bed F-Series truck with Bronco tailgate and fiberglass top. In addition to adding a third row of seats and more room, a Centurion Bronco could be ordered using an F-350 pickup as the donor, allowing the Centurion engines have such as L 7.3 (~ 445 cu in) PowerStroke turbodiesel and 460 in Cu (7.5 L) gasoline V8. This is the Centurion more attractive for people who need a comfortable vehicle towing much faster. Over time some of these cars that still exist are rare and valuable, except for the percentage of some cars in the north who have suffered rust on the tailgate due to the preparation of the body paint poor.
The Centurion Bronco could be ordered with options such as a third row of seats can be folded into a bed, bucket seats second row, a TV with a VCR, and a high-detector radar.
Bronco Centurions are considered after market conversions. Ford introduced the Excursion as a production model official 2000.
Judgement
In mid-1996, Ford has officially decided to stop the Bronco. Wednesday, June 12, 1996, the last Bronco ever built left the assembly line at the Ford Truck Plant in Michigan. The last Bronco was escorted by Jeff Trapp 1970 Ford Bronco during a drive-off ceremony. He was replaced by the Ford Expedition, which responded to a market that has 4 passenger doors preferred. Presented as the successor to the Bronco, more effectively compete with Chevrolet Tahoe GM. The name was reused Bronco a few years later for a concept car similar.
The removal of the Bronco was much lamented in the media and television, and has been the subject of a memorable quote FOX series Arrested Development: Car Salesman: Yeah, the Bronco was abandoned. Wee try to break this thing leaks all about execution. This is the Escape. George Sr.: What a fun name. Can I test?
2004 Concept
Ford Bronco Concept to Show 2004 NY Auto
At the 2004 North American International Auto Show, a Bronco concept car was introduced. Some features of the concept car, as the roof line box-shaped, short wheelbase and round headlamps are characteristics associated with the Early Bronco, but the concept car also had an intercooler 2.0 liter turbo diesel I4 engine and a six-speed manual transmission. It would be next to the slot Ford Escape, as it would be built on the chassis Escape. Ford plans to release this to production, but has not made a decision.
